Book Review: Flowers for Algernon

The Writing Hut

This short story by Daniel Keyes follows the incredible journey of a man with an low IQ(68) who undergoes a surgery to get smarter. And he does.
We follow his progress from the mentally disabled state to the super genius state through his diary, in which he describes what happened and how he felt about it.
In this book we are shown a point of view on life that we sometimes find ourselves in and in that very moment we cannot decide if the people around us are friends or foes. The journey of Charlie Gordon brings us back to such a situation where getting to know more about the world around you makes it look more and more terrifying rather than beautiful.

The book itself shows a very interesting point to the reader from which the readers can conclude that no matter how you look at life there is always something that will bug you about it.
Our protagonist was constantly struggling to understand and talk to the people around and wanted to learn to read and write just to be part of the group, just to find out that making himself smarter doesn’t mean he will be accepted in the group nor that he will be treated better.

It’s a heart breaking story, one that will take you for a spin on the emotional roller-coaster of life.

My Rating: 4 Stars (Should Read)
