This is a question that bugged me for a longer while and my girlfriend strongly disagrees with my answer so I decided I rather write down my arguments than debate with an Aquarius.
Are Mangas Books?
Lets get into it fast and resolve it in a quick and simple manner so everyone can understand. I shall present to you the definition of a book:
A book is a set of written, printed, illustrated, or blank sheets, made of paper, parchment, or other materials, fastened together to hinge at one side, with text and/or images printed in ink. A single sheet within a book is a leaf, and each side of a leaf is a page. A set of text-filled or illustrated pages produced in electronic format is known as an electronic book, or e-book.
Design Check for Mangas, are they really looking like books?
No let’s check mangas for their design standards:
– Is something written/illustrated/printed on paper/parchment or any other material fastened together to hinge at one side with text and/or images printed in ink?
– Can the manga be in electronic format?
We got the design down, it indeed looks like a book! So let us move on to a more serious argument:
Mangas are not books because they are just comics/ are for kids and don’t have a good plot(not what my gf said, but what most people say).
Does it read like a book and go deep as one?
Lets go point by point. For starters mangas are not for kids only. Yes most are for kids and young adults but there are a lot of them out there some of you read for the plot(you know who you are). By that i mean that some mangas have a deep plot and are not as easy to understand as one thinks. It is the same as some books, some are for kids some are not, that’s the end of it.
When it comes to the length of the story, some manags are bigger than books. Read “One Piece” or “Naruto” and see for yourself. Also if you are more of a romance type of person like myself, and like to make omelette in various ways for your special someone, than you have to read Last Game. It’s romance and the plot is so slow your will grow old. Like 60 chapters of confused romance, but I ain’t the type to spoil mangas.
When it comes to is it a book or not, I think most people consider mangas to be just silly comics, which is ignorant as both mangas and comics have sometimes some deep plots that put some books to shame (looking at you 50 Shades of Gray).
Anyway that would be it for this…if you have any counter arguments I would love to hear them and debate them with you, with it I might get more text into this article on why mangas are books.
Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed the blog so far! Have a nice day.
